Songfacts®:

  • This began life as an instrumental white label at the end of 2003 before Positiva records picked up the rights to the track. A vocal track was done by former London Community Gospel choir singer Cookie, who had previously sung backing vocals for the likes of Ms. Dynamite, Depeche Mode and Kylie Minogue.
  • Shapeshifters are Simon Marlin (British) and Max Reich (Swedish). Lola is Simon's wife. Simon explained in 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, "'Lola's Theme' was a working title due to the original string sample being taken from one of Lola's favorite records. It just stuck and gave us the inspiration to add a vocal about her. Simon felt it needed some vocals. The vocal sample was taken from 'Rock Me Tonight' by F.O.S." Simon adds, "But we changed around the order of the lyrics to make our own line, 'I'm a different person, turn my world around,' was not in the original."
  • The string sample was taken from "What About My Love" by Johnnie Taylor, a track from his 1982 album Just Ain't Good Enough.
  • The song topped the American Dance charts.
