Songfacts®:

  • This was the Shirelles' first hit. After being encouraged by a high-school teacher to take part in a school talent show, the Shirelles (at the time, they were the Poquellos) wrote this song and sang it a cappella for the talent show. Soon, their friend Mary Jane Greenberg asked them to audition for their mother, Florence Greenberg, who owned Tiara Records. After auditioning in the Greenberg's living room, they recorded the song on February 7, 1958. Feeling that their group name "Poquellos" was not a very commercialized name, Florence Greenberg had their name changed to the Shirelles. The song was then released by Tiara then leased to Decca for national release. However, after 2 more singles by Decca proved to be unsuccessful, Decca dropped the group. The Shirelles were then signed by Florence Greenberg's new label Scepter.
  • The Shirelles rerecorded the song in 1966. >>>
