Songfacts®:

  • The Singles is an electro-pop girl group comprising actress Scarlett Johansson on vocals, Este Haim on drums, plus musicians Holly Miranda, Kendra Morris and Julia Haltigan. This song finds Johansson comparing a boy to various confectionery items.
  • The track, along with with the rest of the band's material, is inspired by various female pop music songwriters. "The idea was to write super-pop dance music written and performed by girls," Johansson told Rolling Stone. "I love Grimes. And I love the Bangles. And I love the Go-Go's. I wanted it to be like those bands: ultra pop but also a little ironic, a little in on the joke."
  • The song was produced by Dave Sitek, who has worked with Johansson before. The TV on the Radio band member collaborated with the actress on her 2008 album, Anywhere I Lay My Head, which was mainly made up of Tom Waits covers. Sitek released this tune on his Federal Prism record label.
  • Other Scarlett Johansson musical projects have included, Break Up, a collaborative album with singer-songwriter Pete Yorn plus roles in two music videos - Bob Dylan's "When the Deal Goes Down" and Mandy Moore's 1999 single, which was coincidentally titled "Candy." (Maybe Johansson's first experience of the pop world inspired this song's title?)
