Songfacts®:

  • In this punk classic, Iggy Pop sings about how he wants to be used sexually by a woman. Songs like this helped establish Iggy as a punk icon known for unpredictable and outrageous behavior. In an interview with Howard Stern, he explained the sentiment behind the song: "Have you ever seen like a really good looking girl, really nicely dressed, and she's walking down the street with her dog, right? And like her dog is... intimate with her body, and she likes him and everything. Basically, it's the idea of I want to unite with your body. I don't wanna talk about literature with you or judge you as a person. I wanna dog you."
  • This track is well known for its three-chord riff and a continuously repeated single piano note, played by Velvet Underground founding member John Cale, who also produced the track. These elements, along with the heavily distorted sound, has lead critics to consider the track an early example of heavy metal and punk music.
  • Yes, those are sleigh bells that play throughout the song. Iggy Pop was always looking for unusual instrumentation - on "Search And Destroy" you'll hear swords in the background.
  • The song has been covered by numerous artists, including Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Hole, The Sex Pistols, Slayer and Joan Jett. It has also featured in many films, most notably the 1996 action film The Crow: City of Angels, in which vocalist Iggy Pop played the role of Curve, one of the film's villains.
  • Well into his 60s, this song still inspired Iggy Pop to rekindle his notorious stage antics, particularly the stage dive: "because it is our oldest, and most very, very memorable number, I do it," Iggy told Classic Rock Revisited. "I also do it on that song because I push so hard on the first two versus that I can't think of anything to do by the time the guitar solo comes around. When the guitar solo comes, I tend to do a stage dive to go with the solo."
  • This was used in the movies Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels and Friday Night Lights. >>>

  • John McCrea sings "I Wanna Be Your Dog" in character as Artie in the 2021 movie Cruella. This version also appears on the soundtrack; in 2022, the Russian figure skater Alexandra Trusova skated to it in her free skate at the Beijing Olympics, winning the silver medal.
  • When "I Wanna Be Your Dog" was released, the song's lyrics about a man who wants to be dominated by a woman were seen as too sexually explicit for some listeners, and the song's raw and aggressive sound was deemed too abrasive for the masses. The song has since been recognized as a classic of proto-punk music. Iggy Pop detailed to Mojo magazine in 2023 the changing crowd reactions down the decades to the Stooges' classic track. "I used to do 'I Wanna Be Your Dog,' and people just stared in horror," he recalled. "And then I would do 'I Wanna Be Your Dog,' and people would just drink their beer and watch, kind of musing. And it got to the point where I did it and people were grooving. When I go out and do it now go out, they know all the words in the verses. So, that's a beautiful thing."

  • Oldpunk from NorcalCertainly got my attention at the Olympics in the "interesting" Russian skater's free skate. Sandwiched between Tchaikovsky and Smile. So weird.
  • The Butler from New Zealand"Stand" by R.E.M has the same piano back Twang, Twang, Twang, Twang, Twang, Twang, Twang... that is in the background of the Stooges radio version.
R.E.M later covered 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' with Patti Smith (Oddly with her hair bedraggled in the performance she looks a little like Iggy.)
  • Drew Dodds from ChesterfieldThe ultimate shot of dark energy, just never gets old.
  • Carli from Phoenix, AzUsed during the lesbian scene in the movie "The Runaways"
  • James from Dublin, IrelandQuality song. needs more comments though.
  • Tyler from Soldier City - Stc, FlGG Allin also does a cover of it, they speed it up a little and add f--k in a few places. it's awesome. He also does a killer cover of Bo Diddley's Pills.
  • Ringo from Bordeaux, Francethe sex pistols don't covered this song, but sid vicious do.
