Songfacts®:

  • This garage rock track finds Julian Casablancas admonishing city kids who wish to live fast and die young. He also pokes fun at The Strokes' slow and laborious creative process with the couplet, "All the time that I need is never quite enough, all the time that I have is all that's necessary."
  • The song was released as the first single from Comedown Machine. Bassist Nikolai Fraiture told BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe that the band recorded 10 or 11 songs at New York's famed Electric Lady studios. He explained that the process was more collaborative than on their 2011 Angles record, saying, "We got off tour and we had these songs, some left over and some new. We rehearsed in Electric Lady and it was working so we went with it. It was touch-and-go for a while but we hashed it out all together like the good old days. It's a legendary studio and it is not far away from us all, apart from Nick (Valensi) who lives in Los Angeles, but he made the trip out to record."
  • The video is made up of archive footage from throughout The Strokes career, from their early club days to their late-night television appearances as well as backstage clips from festival appearances.
