Songfacts®:

  • This song is about the childhood realization that as you get older, you and your friends are likely to drift apart. >>>

  • In the US, this peaked at #17 on the Alternative Songs chart.
  • In the music video, directed by Roman Coppola, The Strokes compete against Ohio indie rockers Guided By Voices on the game show Family Feud, with then-host Richard Karn presiding. Guns N' Roses members Slash, Matt Sorum, and Duff McKagan are also shown hanging out with the band in a bar.
  • This was used in the movies Click (2006), starring Adam Sandler, and Delivery Man (2013), starring Vince Vaughn. It was also featured in the TV series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in the 2018 episode "Someday."
  • Chris Laufman, a Pittsburgh pop artist who records under the name Wise Blood, recorded this for the multi-artist tribute album Stereogum Presents... Stroked: A Tribute To Is This It. Laufman said of his contribution: "I was psyched and terrified to get 'Someday.' I decided to try and stick with the way the song develops, which I think is four parts that progress, fall apart, then start over again. Everything else I sort of switched up, and I tailored the lyrics a tiny bit to better suit me."
  • Fabrizio Moretti, the band's drummer, was nursing a hangover when he first heard lead singer Julian Casablancas toying with a new melody that became the basis for "Someday." He recalled to NME: "I was staying over at Julian's house one night after a night of debauchery… I had a crazy headache when I woke up. But I woke up to him singing in the bathroom and coming up with, kind of developing the melody for it, and I always thought that was really awesome. It's a very pretty melody."

  • Layton from Paris, TxThis is one of the few songs where when you hear it, you immediatly are addicted to it. Seems like all of The Strokes songs are like that xD
  • Indigo from Adelaide, AustraliaRealising that promises you make when you are young won't always stay so important and strong to you. People move on, we get older, people change. This is a sad song:"When we was young, oh man, did we have fun always, always promises, they break before they're made sometimes, sometimes". One of my favourite Strokes songs, this and barely legal. Is This It is such a great album.
  • Jordan from Montreal, CanadaThis song play in the movie Click.
  • Michelle from Davis, CaThis song has an upbeat tune, but it's about growing apart from your friends and is in fact kind of about facing a sad truth. While your friendships will never be the same, there's always the past to reminisce about. I think the line "Promises, they break before they're made" sums up the insincerities that come from people trying to hold together a broken relationship.
