Songfacts®:

  • This song from The Struts debut album is a call to live life to its fullest, never having to look back and say, "that could have been me."

The Bristol, England rockers had problems with their first record label, which wanted them to alter their sound (more like Bastille) and change frontman Luke Spiller's look, putting him in skinny jeans, T-shirts and sneakers and having him cut his hair. At a crossroads, the band had to decide whether to follow their label's advice or chart their own course. They chose the later, and were proven right when the label went under and the group found their way, landing gigs opening for The Rolling Stones and Mötley Crüe. "Could Have Been Me" was inspired by that time when they had to make that crucial decision.
  • The video was directed by Jonas Åkerlund, whose credits include Coldplay's "Magic" and Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger." The clip shows The Struts larking about London, traveling on the Thames river with a bottle of Jack Daniel's never far away.
