  • This was Diana Ross and the Supremes' second hit with The Temptations - it was credited to "Diana Ross and The Supremes & The Temptations. Like their previous hit ("I'm Gonna Make You Love Me"), it is a cover of an older song and this version was a bigger hit than the original. Written by William "Smokey" Robinson, a version by his group The Miracles reached #39 back in 1962. For this version, Eddie Kendricks and Diana Ross sing the first and second verses respectively and Melvin Franklin and Kendricks take turns with Ross while singing the bridge. >>>

  • Smokey Robinson remembers writing this song at a ball game when he took his father to see the Indians play the Tigers. His father is an Indians fanatic, and Smokey was laughing at him because the Tigers were killing Cleveland. During the game, the sad song came to him. He gets a chuckle when people say, "You must have been very melancholy when you wrote that. I think that a song should be poetic." Smokey said: "I want to hear something that rhymes." >>>
