  "We'd build dens, get comics, sweets, and sometimes cider from the pub," Johnson told Mojo magazine. "Periodically, the school would send out Mr. French, the Arts teacher. He had this little Ford Anglia, and he'd scour the streets looking for us."
• The frozen river of the title serves as both a literal and metaphorical setting. On the one hand, it evokes the wintry landscapes of Johnson's youth - fields blanketed in snow, the biting cold of an English winter, and the boys' frosty refuge.
