Songfacts®:

  • The song and title are derived form the (very) thinly veiled autobiography of writer Jack London. The book is the story of a sailor who gains fame but ends up committing suicide (as Jack London did). >>>

  • The Twilight Singers were formed in 1997 by Greg Dulli as a side project during a hiatus from his Afghan Whigs group. After the Afghan Whigs disbanded in 2001, the frontman used The Twilight Singers as his own artistic vehicle. Dulli considers this to be the best song he ever released with either band. He explained to Uncut magazine:

"I love how easily it came - I was testing a piano to get a part, and then the melody came really fast. I had recently read the book (by Jack London), so I started to imagine it... it was a real harmonic convergence, only a couple of songs have come to me like that. I had a really close relationship with that song, I felt it deep inside me."
