Songfacts®:

  • The Upsetters were a Jamaican band fronted by reggae producer Lee "Scratch" Perry. They were called after Perry's nickname of Upsetter, which came from his song "I Am The Upsetter," a musical dismissal of his former boss Coxsone Dodd.
  • This off-kilter saxophone instrumental seemed to ubiquitous in late 1969 in the UK after it was chosen to used as the soundtrack to a Cadburys chocolate commercial directed by Terry Gilliam. Backed with "Dollar in the Teeth," it made it to #5 on the UK Singles Chart. Upsetters bassist Aston "Family Man" Barrett recalled to Mojo magazine:

"It would have been higher if not for a domestic dispute. When we were to come on tour to carry it to #1, Scratch get a stab in his arm from one of his ladies. We have to wait two months, so by the time we come we could only reach it to #5."
  • The song title is a reference to the spaghetti western Django, released in 1966.
