Songfacts®:

  • This song finds The Vaccines' singer and chief songwriter Justin Young brooding after the ending of a relationship. He told NME: "When you break up with someone you assume their life has changed for the better and that they're off having fun with new friends in new places. Most of the time, though, they're feeling just like you."
  • Young told CMU that lyrically, What Did You Expect From The Vaccines? was inspired by "personal experience, jealousy, anger, love and lust." He added: "I only ever write lyrics about things I'm obsessing over. It's therapy and I think you're best qualified to sing about things you know. I think you can always tell when lyrics are emotionally void."
