Songfacts®:

  • "The Liar" began as a poem that Waterboys frontman Mike Scott posted on Twitter when Donald Trump was first impeached. After the Capitol riots of January 6, 2021, Scott rewrote it a little tougher. "All the lines are either explicit or symbolic references to characters in the Trumpian drama," he told The Sun.
  • Scott set his lyrics to an appropriately hard Simon Dine tune. "The Liar" is one of six songs the Waterboys singer wrote with longtime Paul Weller collaborator Dine on the All Souls Hills album. "Simon sends me instrumentals and if any of them suggests a melody or lyric to me, I get to work on it," Scott told The Sun. "I love the tracks he sends me because they are full of personality and it gives me an opportunity to add melody and words to music I wouldn't have thought of writing myself."
  • Dine sampled the actual crowd sounds from the Capitol riots for this song.
