  • I know that if I die, my only choice is still defending
    No matter what they say
My love for you is greater than their powers
    And their armies from above

The Weeknd recorded this bombastic ballad for the James Cameron film Avatar: The Way of Water. Lyrically, it doesn't stray from the movie's themes as Abel Tesfaye sings of death, war and the strengthening power of love.
  • The Weeknd wrote "Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength)" with Swedish House Mafia and the soundtrack's composer, Simon Franglen. Swedish House Mafia helped produce three tracks on the Weeknd's 2022 album, Dawn FM, including "Moth To A Flame."
  • The song began taking shape during the 2022 summer after The Way of Water producer Jon Landau met the Weeknd during his world tour.

"When he came in, Swedish House Mafia came up with the concept of the song, and they embraced working with our composer, Simon Franglen," Landau told Complex at The Way of Water London premiere. "And together, they came up with a song that is true to who The Weeknd is but is organic to our film. And that's what was important to us. We didn't want just something to come on at the end of the movie that felt outside of it, but he embraced that collaboration, and his voice, oh my God."
  • XO, Hollywood Records and Republic Records released "Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength)" as the lead single from the Avatar: The Way of Water soundtrack on December 15, 2022. Previous soundtrack singles recorded by The Weeknd include "Earned It" from Fifty Shades of Grey and "Pray For Me" (alongside Kendrick Lamar) from Black Panther.
  • The accompanying video, directed by Quentin Deronzier, is set largely within the film's fictional Pandora landscape, with brief glimpses of The Weeknd illuminated by blue light amid flashes of fire and water. Later in the clip, the Na'vi inhabitants evacuate into the ocean as a raging forest fire approaches.
