Songfacts®:

  • Another staple Weeknd track about a relationship he's ruined, this one finds him regretting his cold heart. Now that his ex has moved onto someone else, he realizes he's "out of time." However, Abel's been working on himself and should her new man mess up, he hopes she'll give him a second chance.
  • The title track of The Weeknd's 2020 After Hours album has a similar theme of regret for ruining a relationship. In both instances, he wants to renew their romance, assuring the ex he will treat her better.
  • The Weeknd recorded the track for his Dawn FM album. The record finds him stuck in a purgatory state, wanting to reach the light at the end of the tunnel. Jim Carrey voices a 103.5 Dawn FM DJ guiding the singer to the other side.
  • Carrey appears at the end of the track as the soft rock radio DJ. He assures The Weeknd he's almost reaching his destination and soon will be "free from all trauma, pain, guilt, and shame."
  • The Weeknd co-wrote and co-produced the song with the synth musician Oneohtrix Point Never, real name Daniel Lopatin. Japanese musicians Tetsuro Oda and Tomoko Aran also get credited because it samples the intro to Aran's 1983 song "Midnight Pretenders."
  • Carrey also appears in the song's music video alongside Squid Game's HoYeon Jung. The clip finds The Weeknd and the South Korean actress drinking, dancing and partaking in karaoke before their evening takes a dark turn. As Carrey's narration plays out, we see him putting a mask on The Weeknd in the surgery room.
  • The video won for Best R&B at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2022.
