Songfacts®:

  • Originally debuted by The Weeknd during his show in the UK, this was dubbed "Mood Music 2" at the time. "The Hills" was originally titled "Mood Music" when it debuted during Coachella 2015.
  • When The Weeknd recorded the track for Beauty Behind The Madness, he was joined by Lana Del Rey - the only woman featured on an otherwise completely male album. The Weeknd told Pitchfork: "Me and Lana have been friends for a long time. I've inspired her, she's inspired me. I feel like we've always been talking to each other through our music. She is the girl in my music, and I am the guy in her music. It's just this ghostly collaboration that feels the most natural on the whole album."
  • On this morbid R&B track, the pair croon about their obsessions, The Weeknd for a girl he loves and Del Rey regarding the glamour of Hollywood. The pair join together on the chorus in which they croon how they feel they're prisoners to their addictions.
  • Lana Del Ray came on stage during The Weeknd's second show at Los Angeles' The Forum on December 10, 2015 for this song. It was the first time the songstress had joined him to sing "Prisoner" live.
