Songfacts®:

  • "Technology" was one of the first three songs recorded by The Whigs. Parker Gispert write the lyrics at his parents' home in Roswell, Georgia the night before the song was recorded. In his Songfacts interview, he said that it's about someone giving more of their attention to the television than to the person next to them. "At the time, cell phones had been around, but it was the early 2000s and we weren't nearly as consumed as we are now," he said.
  • The band Pavement was an inspiration for the lyrics.
  • The attention-grabbing, soul-sucking TV shows Parker Gispert had in mind in this song were daytime talk shows, specifically The Jerry Springer Show.
