Songfacts®:

  • Remember You're A Womble is the second album produced by the ad-hoc group The Wombles. The title track was released as a single. After Mike Batt's success with "The Wombling Song," a cynic might think this was more of the same, but "Remember You're A Womble" is actually a fine song in its own right - bearing in mind that it was written primarily for children. Far more uptempo than the original; the album was recorded at Wessex Studios, produced by composer Batt, and released on the CBS label in July 1974. The single, which features some snazzy violin and a sax, was released in April 1974 backed by "Bungo's Birthday," Bungo being another Womble character.
  • "Remember You're A Womble" actually earned an appearance on the Easter 1974 edition of Top Of The Pops, which is not that surprising as by that time it had reached #20 on the BBC singles chart. Most - but by no means all - of the songs on this program were mimed, and so was this one; even Mike Batt can't play a guitar wearing Womble gloves! >>>

  • When ABBA performed "Waterloo" at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, Agnetha Fältskog of the Swedish band wore a Wombles badge. Why she did so was a mystery for decades until Chief Womble Mike Batt revealed the answer in 2024 to The Radio Times.

"I was the interval act and chatted to Agnetha and Frida backstage," he explained. "I had badges for our new song, 'Remember You're a Womble,' so I gave one each to Agnetha and Frida. I didn't know that Agnetha would pin it to her blue velvet jumpsuit, and so the Wombles had their place in history!"
  • Mike Batt wrote Art Garfunkel's "Bright Eyes" and Kate Melula's "The Closest Thing To Crazy," but he regrets being best known for his novelty group The Wombles. "I once whinged to Paul McCartney that I'll always be known for The Wombles," Batt recalled. "He said: 'I have the same problem with The Beatles.'"
