Songfacts®:

  • Most Zombies songs are written by their keyboard player, Rod Argent, but this one was composed by lead singer Colin Blunstone. The song was inspired by his relationships of long ago that didn't work out - if there was any other way they could have ended, he would have found it.

With lilting piano from Argent, the song is part of just the fifth album by The Zombies, who broke up in 1968 shortly before their landmark second album Odessey and Oracle took off in America. In the '00s, Blunstone and Argent began playing together again and making new music.
