Songfacts®:

  • In this song, lead singer Colin Blunstone warns a girl that he is emotionally toxic. He's still hung up on the girl who left him, so it's best to just leave him be.
  • Zombies bass player Chris White wrote this song. It's one of many downcast tunes he wrote for the band, joining "What More Can I Do," "Don't Go Away," and "I Don't Want To Know."
  • This was the follow-up to "She's Not There," the Zombies debut single. Their producer, Ken Jones, tried to replicate that first hit by having Blunstone sing in the same breathy style, but this time it didn't work nearly as well and the song failed to chart.

"'Leave Me Be' was a much stronger song on stage," Chris White wrote in the liner notes to Hung Up On A Dream - A Zombie History. "When we heard the recording we thought it was too soft, wishy-washy. Ken Jones wanted to retain that wispy quality in 'She's Not There' and we never really liked that. We were so upset that we complained and came off the tour and re-did Colin's lead vocal, but they didn't release that mix." >>>
