Songfacts®:

  • The label spells this "Song For Jimmy" but the reference is clearly to Jimi as in Hendrix. This Phil Lynott composition was recorded in 1980 by the original line up of Thin Lizzy as a special one-off tribute to Hendrix ten years after his death. It contains a number of references to Hendrix song titles, and is surprisingly drum based.

There was talk at some point of Phil playing Hendrix in a biopic, which would have been a dream film. Unfortunately, his resemblance to the legendary guitarist was more than skin deep, and within six years he was dead from essentially the same cause. >>>
