Songfacts®:

  • "Say It" is the last track on Third Eye Blind's fifth album, Dopamine.

Frontman, Stephan Jenkins, talked about the song in his Songfacts interview: "It's a conversation written down. A friend said to me, 'If I told you what you wanted, you'd tell me to shut up,' and I laughed."

He continued, "I played that back in chords and it actually made everything that was possible to say sayable. It was a conversation that just occurred."
  • The middle of the tune features a spoken-word part by the woman who had the conversation with Jenkins. He hesitated to reveal in our interview that the person who inspired the song is the actual woman on the recording, maybe because she says lines like, "Nothing you write will ever match this. You should go back to that actress."

"That actress" could possibly be referring to Winona Ryder or Charlize Theron, both of whom Jenkins has dated in the past.

Jenkins revealed on Twitter that the spoken word section is done by rapper and producer, K.Flay.
