Songfacts®:

  • This is one of many songs which compares being in love to a medical state, in which being alone is like sickness and love the cure. In our interview with Thompson Twins lead singer Tom Bailey, he called it, "Kind of semi-mystical love voyage song," adding, "lots of dry ice and clouds in that one."
  • This was released as the second single from Thompson Twins album Into The Gap, following their big hit "Hold Me Now." The group enjoyed global success in the mid-'80s and performed at Live Aid in 1985 with Madonna joining them on stage.
  • Robert Palmer released a song with a similar title and theme in 1979 with "Bad Case Of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)," which hit #14 in the US.

Here are a few more songs that compare the singer's love to a medical condition:

    "Doctor Jones" by Aqua.
    "Bad Medicine" by Bon Jovi.
    "Calling Dr. Love" by Kiss.
    "Disease" by Matchbox Twenty.
  • Tom Bailey's father was a doctor, but that had nothing to do with the song, as the female member of the group (who was Tom's girlfriend and future wife), Alannah Currie, wrote the chorus. The third member, Joe Leeway, also got a songwriting credit.
