Songfacts®:

  • In this song, T.I. is trying to convince a girl that she deserves better, and should leave her no-good boyfriend for him. He can't understand why she would stick with this guy when he has so much more to offer.
  • This uses a sample from the 1991 Crystal Waters song "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)." The sample is the keyboard riff from that song slowed down. >>

  • The line, "Why you wanna go and do that" was lifted from Q-Tip's line in the 1998 A Tribe Called Quest song, "Find A Way," where he raps, "Now why you wanna go and do that love, huh?" Tip previously used the line when he guested on Janet Jackson's "Got 'Til It's Gone."

As a result, all three members of A Tribe Called Quest are credited as writers on "Why You Wanna," along with Towa Tei and Bebel Gilberto, who wrote "Technova (Folknova)," which is sampled on "Find A Way." Additionally, "Gypsy Woman" composers Crystal Waters and Neal Conway, T.I., and producers Kevin "Khao" Cates and J Dilla are all listed as writers, bringing the total to 10.
