Songfacts®:

  • The lead single from Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's first joint album finds the husband and wife duo trading verses in which they deliver lessons on how to treat females right. Hill starts things off letting the listener's know that as Aretha Franklin said, it's all about R.E.S.P.E.C.T.. She continues to offer a female's perspective before McGraw echoes similar sentiments, but from a man's point of view.
  • The song was written by Shy Carter (Sugarland's "Stuck Like Glue", Charlie Puth's "One Call Away"), Dave Gibson (Montgomery Gentry's "Lonely and Gone") and Joe London (Jason DeRulo's "Wiggle," Thomas Rhett's "Die a Happy Man").
  • McGraw and Hill are parents of three teenage daughters, so it's a reasonable assumption that they latched on to the song with their childrens' now and future suitors in mind. Speaking with WBWN, the couple discussed their reaction after listening to it for the first time:

"First of all, it was simply just a great song," Hill shared. "I connected to it lyrically, melodically, everything. It's important that we."

McGraw interjected, "I think that's the key word. It's important."

Hill continued, "It's important that we be honest with one another as people."

McGraw added, "It's important that young women hear that message from the men in their lives and from the other women in their lives. It's important that the young men hear this message (too) so they know how to speak to a girl."
  • Tim McGraw has charted at least one Hot 100 debut every year since 1994. He upped his streak to 24 years when this song debuted on the listing dated April 15, 2017.
