Songfacts®:

  • "Good Girls" starts innocently enough, with two friends - Jesse and Jenny - getting together for a night of drunken fun in the country. They drink some cheap wine (Boone's Farm) and drive through a corn field, but then the song takes a dark turn.

Jesse's man has been sleeping around with Jenny, and Jesse, who is driving, let's her know she's wise. If she can't have him, neither of them will, so Jesse drives onto the railroad tracks and they get hit by a train, killing them both. It's an uncharacteristically morbid song by Tim McGraw, released as an album cut on his 10th album, Southern Voice.
  • Four Nashville songwriters teamed up to write this song: Aimee Mayo, Chris Lindsey, Brad Warren and Brett Warren. Brad and Brett are brothers whose compositions include "The Lucky One" by Faith Hill and "Anyway" by Martina McBride; Mayo and Lindsey are a married couple who co-wrote Lonestar's "Amazed" and McGraw's "Drugs Or Jesus." On the Songfacts Podcast, Lindsey called "Good Girls" "a murder-suicide song," and said, "I didn't think we'd get away with that one."
