Songfacts®:

  • On this track, T-Boz and Chilli from TLC reminisce on the good times growing up as they welcome an old friend back into the fold. "Everybody has that feeling - I don't care if it's a family member or a friend - that no matter how long it's been since you've seen each other, when you do, it's just like yesterday," T-Boz told Entertainment Weekly. "You remember your good times with that person. And that's that good feeling that we were going for when we wrote it."
  • The appropriately old-school rapper Snoop Dogg makes an appearance on this track with a verse about the good old days when he would be creeping on the ladies. "I'm just the same OG, giving y'all a little TLC," he rhymes.
  • T-Boz (Tionne Watkins) wrote the song with the songwriter James Abrahart and the track's producer, D'Mile (Dernst Emile). Snoop Dogg also earned a writing credit for his contribution.
  • "Way Back" was the first single released from the fifth TLC album, the first recorded without Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, who died in 2002, the year their fourth album, 3D, was issued.
  • The video, directed by LCR$, was the first one they made since "Damaged" in 2003. The clip finds them throwing down at a '90s-style block party in Los Angeles.
  • The TLC album was executive produced by Ron Fair, who has also worked with the likes of Christina Aguilera, Mary J Blige and The Black Eyed Peas. The horns that Fair added to this track and others were performed by the same musicians that played on Michael Jackson's Bad and Thriller.
