Songfacts®:

  • TobyMac's music has always come from the heart, but nothing could prepare him for his heart-wrenching journey after the tragic loss of his 21-year-old son, Truett, to an accidental drug overdose in October 2019. The pain he carries is now laid bare in his raw and personal album Life after Death.

"I will forever be a different man," TobyMac told People of the ways in which his life has changed since the death of Truett, an aspiring rapper. "I thought, honestly, with my five kids and my bride, that I had the perfect life. And we're really messy now. It's not so neat anymore."

As TobyMac poured his emotions into the music, the songs became a reflection of his healing process. From gut-wrenchingly sad tracks like "21 Years" and "Everything About You," to a glimmer of hope emerging through the darkness on songs like "The Goodness."
  • TobyMac's resilience shines through as he finds strength in the good, the bad, and the ugly. He perceives the sun still shining above him.

    Everywhere that I go
    You keep showin' up
Lord, You make me wanna shout it, oh
You're the goodness in my life

In the wake of Truett's loss, many find it hard to reconcile TobyMac's unwavering faith and impeccable reputation with the unfairness of the tragedy. Yet, the singer stands firm in his beliefs, challenging the notion of the prosperity gospel peddled by some televangelists. Rather than subscribing to the idea that a good person will always be free from hardships, TobyMac offers a profound insight. To him, being a true saint isn't just about being inherently good, but also experiencing the goodness of God during life's toughest trials.
  • This sweet pick-me-up of God's love is a collaboration with blind Nigerian singer, songwriter, and musician Blessing Offor.
  • TobyMac co-wrote "The Goodness" with Kyle Williams, Gabe Real, Bryan Fowler. "I've been walking through a two-and-a-half-year valley, after losing my firstborn son," Mac told K-Love radio. "I wrote on a napkin one day 'You're still the goodness in my life.' I have experienced the goodness of God my whole life, and I will continue to look for and experience the goodness of God."
  • TobyMac teamed up with Kyle Williams and Bryan Fowler to co-produce "The Goodness." Their production weaves a strong pop vibe with gospel, R&B, and urban influences, pushing the boundaries for the CCM artist.
  • Fowler, Williams, Real and singer-songwriter Ryan Stevenson sing the backing vocals. Fowler also plays the guitar and bass and Jon Reddick plays keyboards.

Reddick visited TobyMac's house the day after Truett died. He played the piano there, leaving the grieving home awash in music. Reddick also helped TobyMac and his daughter Marlee create the deeply personal Life after Death song "Everything About You."
  • "The Goodness" was released as the fifth single from Life after Death on June 2, 2022. It climbed to #1 on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart, marking TobyMac's seventh leader on the listing and Offor's first.
