Songfacts®:

  • This was written by Tok Tok Tok lead singer Tokunbo Akinro and instrumentalist Morten Klein. Tokunbo moved from Germany to Nigeria as a child, and this song deals with her experience returning to Germany when she was 10. In I Got Thunder: Black Women Songwriters and Their Craft, she said: "My parents divorced when I was small and my mother returned to Germany. Since she lived far away from me, I always wanted to see her and the part of my family that was still here. So until the age of 10 when I moved here, I associated Germany with only positive things, mainly my family. When I moved here it was the first time I encountered hostilities and alienation. It came as a shock, and with time I developed my own ways of dealing with it. The song deals with my racism experiences and also the experiences of friends of mine with racism in the United States."
