Songfacts®:

  • This song tells the story of a man looking back at his father's abrupt departures from the household during his childhood. He recalls the sickening feeling he got when his daddy left the family yet again and his "mother's tears coming through the walls."
  • The song is a track from Odell's second record, Wrong Crowd. He said, "The album follows a narrative of a man held at ransom by his childhood, yearning for it, yearning for nature- a desire for innocence in this perverse world in which he now lives. It's a fictional story but the emotions and feelings are obviously ones I have felt – though the stories are elaborated and exaggerated. I wanted to create a world with a heightened sense of reality."
  • Tom Odell took time off after two years constant touring and promoting his debut record and moved to New York. He recalled to Q magazine: "I just threw paint at the canvas and wrote about 100 songs for the (Wrong Crowd) album. I'd already written 21 songs in New York alone, but only one of them - "Daddy" - made the final album, and I nearly didn't put that on. Glad I did, though."
