Songfacts®:

  • This song is about the Stonewall Riots of June 1969. The Stonewall Inn was a gay bar in the Greenwich Village section of New York City, and was subjected to constant harassment by police. On June 28, 1969, patrons fought back when police raided the bar, and riots lasted through the weekend. The publicity led to an increased awareness of the treatment of homosexuals by police, and helped unite the gay community as they organized to fight for their rights. >>>
