Songfacts®:

  • Before he formed the Tom Robinson Band, Robinson was in a short-lived acoustic outfit called Café Society which recorded an eponymous album on the Konk label. Although it was said to have sold only 600 copies, producer Ray Davies wanted to keep control over Robinson's songs. Robinson wrote "Don't Take No For An Answer" as a protest. The song appears too to contain a thinly veiled reference to Robinson's homosexuality: "Just living a lie." In later life he would surprise everyone by marrying a woman named Sue Brearley.
  • "Don't Take No For An Answer" appears on the EP Rising Free.... which was released on the EMI label, and contains some blistering axework by Danny Kustow; Track 2 is "...Glad To Be Gay"; Track 3 is "Martin," written by Robinson; "Right On Sister" is Track 4 written by Robinson, Kustow, Taylor & Butterfield. The record was produced by Chris Thomas and engineered by Bill Price. >>>
