Songfacts®:

  • After one of Tones and I's best friends passed away, she struggled to write any music she was happy with. The Aussie singer felt under pressure as she was trying to complete her debut album but couldn't finish it because of her writer's block. Inspiration came from Sony Music Australia chairman and CEO Denis Handlin, who told her a saying from his late mom: "On a cloudy day, look up and try and find the sun."

Tones knew she wanted to use that as a lyric, and the next time she went into the studio, the lyrics for this gospel-tinged track poured out.
  • Speaking to Apple Music's Zane Lowe, Tones and I said rather than being a sad song, it's about "finding your feet" and learning to take the positives from life's experiences.
  • Tones And I wrote "Cloudy Day" with the track's producer, Dann Hume. The drummer of Melbourne, Australia-based indie rock band Evermore, Hume's other credits include Troye Sivan's "The Quiet" and Bic Runga's "Hello Hello."
  • In the early hours of January 26, 2021, Frankston Bombers footballer Ben Tournier (aka "T") died after rolling his car off the Nepean Highway in Mornington, Melbourne. Tones and T had been good friends for over 10 years and she penned several other tracks on Welcome to the Madhouse about the passing of her close friend. They include "Sad Songs" and "Fall Apart," while the record closes with a rap song she wrote for his 29th birthday in 2020: "Bars (RIP T)."
