Songfacts®:

  • Tones and I (Toni Watson) started her solo music career as a busker playing for tips at Byron Bay in New South Wales. That led to her meeting her manager, Jackson Walkden-Brown, and signing to Bad Batch Records/Sony Music Australia. She wrote this song while quarantining at home in Melbourne as she reflected on her journey from street busker to Platinum-selling musician.
  • Tones And I wrote the song about chasing and fulfilling her dreams and the way she thought she'd feel as opposed to the way she actually feels. "It's about genuine happiness and what we think we need to have happiness versus what we actually want," she explained. "The truth is, we only ever want anything because we think it will make us happy, but it's never that simple."
  • New Zealander Dann Hume produced the song. Hume won Producer of the Year at the ARIA Music Awards of 2019 for his work on Matt Corby's album Rainbow Valley.
  • Bad Batch Records and Elektra Records released the song on November 13, 2020 as the lead single from Tones And I's debut studio album, Welcome to the Madhouse. It became her third song to reach the Top 10 of the ARIA charts, following "Dance Monkey," and "Never Seen the Rain."
  • Tones and I dropped Jonas Blue's remix of the song on January 29, 2021.

She also shared an alternate version accompanied by a performance video filmed at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena. Tones and I's live rendition transforms the song into a brass-filled gospel anthem with the help of G Flip, The Pierce Brothers, Adrian Eagle, Alice Blake and the Melbourne Gospel Choir.
