Songfacts®:

  • Following her success with "Dance Monkey," Tones and I found herself in a dark space. She felt people just wanted to bring her down, and for a time had this overwhelming sadness. She wrote this song about her depression and how people wanted her to take medication when all she wanted was love.
  • The song finds Tones questioning why she's so "damn lonely" and wondering why she feels this way. She wanted to share about her depression in song, as it's the only way she could communicate how she was feeling. "If I'm going to write a song called 'Lonely' that talks in depth about how I feel, I have to be really honest, because I don't just write songs about nothing and I never will," Tones told Apple Music. "So I decided to finally open up and tell this side of me."
