Songfacts®:

  • This song is Maynard James Keenan's acceptance that his mother, Judith Marie, will soon be dead. He knows that his mother will make it to heaven: "Never told a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one." He believes his mother has not sinned in her life. >>

  • This precedes "10,000 Days (Wings, Pt. 2)," which follows the storyline, on the 10,000 Days album. 10,000 days is the approximate time from when Keenan's mother suffered a debilitating stroke to when she died.

  • Hookerwithapenis from Home"All you know about me's what I've sold you, Dumb f--k." Everyone here is talking about how much they know Maynard James Keenan and how much of an atheist he is... The fact is, you don't f--king know him!!! You know nothing! I know nothing about him! You can't consider anything he says as being factual. He knows what to say, and he says it... Don't overanalyze him.
  • Thatguy from UsMJK is an atheist. Just because somebody mentions religion or uses religious themes, it does not necessarily mean they are religious. His reference to his mother's innocence is the same here, as it was in APC's "Judith." He does not know she is going to heaven, but says that if she does she should proclaim her innocence to God. He references her innocence as it seems unfair for a faithful, sinless person to suffer and die.
  • Angie from Louisville, Ky, KyLet's keep in mind that the time between Judith and Wings for Marie was of great transition. She was there, and then she was mercifully gone. Judith, was to me, Maynard's personal anger towards the creator she seemed to believe in so deeply even after her stroke and paralysis. Why would a creator so wonderful and worth having such devoted faith in do something to one of his followers? In Wings, it's about JMK finally being free and having the ability to STAND in front of her creator and say, here I am, I never lost faith in you, it's your turn to give me what I am owed in the afterlife.
  • Trevor from Tulsa, OkHmmm, religion eh? Toolism. Now I just have to trademark it. But anyways, brilliant song; when I first heard it I thought it was about Lucifer coming to the gates of heaven and all that.
  • Alden from Portland, Meand yes TOOL has tons of depth, you could practically start a religion from their work.
  • Alden from Portland, Me10,00 days is also nearly the length of a saturn year, which seems significant in regard to the song "The Grudge"
  • Russie from Lubbock, Txof course we're picking apart a tool or APC song that's what they're for, I think that is why Maynard writes them in the way he does. To get stuff off his chest and make us wonder. I hate the fact that his mother was in a coma and that he has issues. But I love the music he makes from it. I wish I could do the same.
  • Michael from Clonmel, Irelandthis song relates to maynards mother.she was in a coma for many years.in part two the lyrics say "shake ur fist at the gate saying ive come home now".this refers to his mothers return to heaven ie. the gates of heaven
  • David from Lakeland, FlHe wasn't arrogant to me. He's kinda funny in person and his nose is big lol
  • Steve from London, United Kingdom10 000 days also happens to be roughly 27 years which is the age jim morrison, jimi hendrix and kurt cobain died
  • Geeker from Snickers, WiI think this song is about how Maynard's father forced him to prostitute himself on skid row for approximatley 27 years when he was a child.
  • Corporallclegg from Waikoloa, HiIn response to Adam from brownsville
How would I have come up with the idea of what this song was about if I was oblivious to the writing style of tool? Is your facetious comment agreeing with my observation of the premise of this song or are you just trying to insult me.
Just for the record I have seen 13 tool shows not including the one I'm going to see tomorrow 12 11 07 at bill gram memorial auditorium so I think I have a fairly decent grasp on the concepts of tool not to mention I met Maynard (who was an arrogant prick by the way) while working in the islands.
  • Tobby from Shreveport, La"10,000 days in the fire is long enough" refers to the amount of time his mother spent in a wheelchair
  • Adam from Brownsville, TnPersonally i believe corporalclegg from the islands is oblivious to the fact that TOOL actually has alot of depth to alot of their songs so next time before u underestimate their work, learn a little bit about them
  • Corporallclegg from Waikoloa, HiPersonally I think this song is about satan falling from grace and in part 2 his rise back to god (10,000 days in the fire is long enough your coming home) but I could be giving Tool more credit then they deserve to think they would write a song that had that deep of a story behind it.
  • James from Victoria, CanadaHe wasn't angry at his mom in Judith. In fact i don't want to discuss that, leave that for that Judith songfact page
  • Chris from Monticello, KyIn Judith, I don't for see him as angry at his mother. He is more questioning than angry.
  • Amie from Fort Worth, TxI think it is interesting to see Maynards attitude change towards his mother. In APC's Mer de Noms, in Judith, he is angry at her for having so much faith in god when he paralyzed her, but then after she dies he realizes her reasons for keeping faith.
