Songfacts®:

  • Torres told The Guardian this song is her "attempt to rewrite the story of Noah and the Ark" while considering identity.

"It's layered for a reason," she added, "but I was thinking about how being in the middle of the sea with people from all over the world really equalizes everyone. You're not really an American anymore when you're in the ocean."

So why Poland? "I was very interested in Poland at the time," Torres said. "It's completely by random."
  • Torres gave a different interpretation of the song's meaning to Spin, reflecting its many layers. "That song is about falling in love or love at first sight, which happens to me a lot," she explained. "I'm a sucker and I fall for people pretty easily. 'A Proper Polish Welcome' is about having that happen to you and realizing you're never going to see that person again realistically. It happens every day."
