Songfacts®:

  • This was the second single Trace Adkins released, following There's a Girl in Texas. One of his most popular songs, it tells the story of a breakup where he tells his girl he'll leave a light on for her in case she ever comes back. He wants her back so bad that he turns on every light, figuring he'll start turning them off when he starts getting over her, which he never does.
  • This song was written by the Nashville songwriter Kent Robbins, who in 1997 died in a car accident at age 50. Robbins also wrote the Gary Allen song "Her Man" and The Judds song "Young Love (Strong Love)."
  • Adkins says he loves to do this song, but vocally, it's his hardest one to sing.

  • Joshua Daniel Kelly from Birmingham AlabamaI believe that this song is one of the best songs that this country artist has ever sang in his life it just touches my heart and helps me to want to remember that when you believe that you have been in a not so good relationship someone and you and you believe that person but the other one still loves you and tells you he will leave the light on so that she can find her way back when she realizes she has made a big mistake that's the whole us remember that there are times we try to make name Brian saw a new life when we finally realize it we were better when I was with that other person I think that's what Trace Adkinsis trying to say
