Songfacts®:

  • The video for this country ballad was shot by Peter Zavadil in Adkins' hometown of Sarepta, Louisiana. Zavadil told NWLA News: "The idea of this song is, cherish the moments of your life. It's a powerful song - a great thing. He (Adkins) has a powerful voice, but he sings this song with a tone of he's been there, and he's sincere."
  • Zavadil has been on the country music scene since the 1990s and has received CMA (Country Music Association) awards for his work on Brad Paisley's "I'm Gonna Miss Her" and Sarah Evans' "Born to Fly" videos. He revealed in the same NWLA News interview why Adkins decided to return to Sarepta to film the promo: "He's very close to his mom and dad and this is home to him. When he started thinking about the video, he decided he wanted to go back to his roots - where he played football, where he went to school."
  • This leapt from #40 to #12 in the Hot 100 following Adkins second-place finish on The Celebrity Apprentice.
  • This song written by Ashley Gorley and Lee Thomas Miller was named Song of the Year at the 39th Annual Nashville Songwriters Hall Fame induction ceremony in Nashville.
  • According to AOL when Miller and Gorley first worked on the song, they were so busy writing it and getting it recorded that they didn't get into the emotion of it. It was only when Adkins recorded it that the duo realized its depth.
  • The song originated with an actual incident that happened to Gorley when his kids were running around as his repairman was working. The maintenance guy told him and his wife he's got two babies of his own, aged 36 and 23.

Five years later there's a plumber workin' on the water heater
    Dog's barkin', phone's ringin'
One kid's cryin', one kid's screamin'
    She keeps apologizin'
He says "They don't bother me
I've got two babies of my own
    One's 36, one's 23

Gorley explained to American Songwriter that he told Lee Thomas Miller the story, saying "Hey, this happened, I feel like there's a song in there somewhere.'"

They decided on the "You're Gonna Miss This" title and started working on different angles.

  • Chelsea from Tall Timbers, MdThis song really relates to my life. Im to that age where i want to be away from home, i get tired of my life and everything & everyone in it, and i want to live my own life with my own rules, my dad always tells me to slow things down to realize that what i have now, and my life now, i really am going to miss it.
I finally give in now, and my life is going by fast. It really shows you to live your life to the absolute fullest, mind the bumps and curves in the road, their there to slow you down, problems in life make life interesting, and worth living through.
