It was collected by librarian Steve Roud and is number 5452 in the Roud Folk Song Index. The most common version is from 1708, as collected by James Halliwell-Phillipps. It has of course been published and recorded countless times, including an arrangement as "Girls And Boys Come Out To Play" by G. A. Macfarren (1813-87), published by Novello & Co in 1901.
