Cuckolds All A Row

Album: English Country Dances (1640)

Songfacts®:

  • According to historian Lucy Worsley, this traditional English dance in 6/8 time was a favorite of Charles II. Clearly His Majesty had a sense of humor as well as good taste in music because he is known to have had no fewer than 14 mistresses, including the wife of the diplomat Charles Palmer, with whom he sired five children.

There are lyrics, and one set of these was published in the infamous Pills To Purge Melancholy, but for reasons of good taste, "Cuckolds All A Row" is best rendered as an instrumental. The time signature has been known to vary as well as the words. >>>
