I'm On My Way To Canaan Land

Songfacts®:

  • This gospel number is not to be confused with the William Golden composition "To Canaan's Land I'm On My Way," although it may have been loosely inspired by it. Of unknown origin, it is performed in the 1960 film Elmer Gantry, wherein the arrangement is credited to Mahalia Jackson.

The land of Canaan corresponds to the modern day Levant or thereabouts, although here it is clearly used as a metaphor for the Promised Land. >>>
