Ouer the Broome Bessy

Album: various (1550)

Songfacts®:

  • This song in 3/2 time probably renders best as a lute instrumental, for which instrument it appears to have been written by that great universal composer Anon.

There is a variant in a minor mode: "Brown Bessy, Sweet Bessy, Come Over to Me." The spelling may also differ - i.e. "Come Over The Born, Bessy."

Although undated, it certainly predates the ascent of Elizabeth I to the throne, being a popular song at the start of the first Elizabethan Age, and was adapted by William Birche to sing the Queen's praises. >>>
