Songfacts®:

  • A quilting party is a somewhat antiquated social gathering that was popular in 19th Century America; although needlework has been a feminine pastime ever since Penelope spent three years weaving a burial shroud for the father of her lost husband, eligible men were seldom in short supply at quilting parties in the New World.

In March 1881, a quilting party at Auburn, North Carolina ended in tragedy when Rufus Fuller stabbed his love rival Isaac Taylor in the throat, severing his jugular vein.
  • Also known as "Aunt Dinah's Quilting Party", "Seeing Nellie Home" and variants, "The Quilting Party" is no murder ballad but an original American folk song that has been widely recorded in several different styles, perhaps the most alluring being the instrumental arrangement by David L. Walters for the Jacksonville State University Marching Ballerinas and a full military band. >>
