Songfacts®:

  • "Rush" is an electrifying club-pop anthem that celebrates recreational drug-fueled early morning dance parties. It is a tribute to the wild nights Troye Sivan spent partying on Melbourne's Smith Street, mending his heartache. With sultry vibes, it evokes a massive crowd embracing acceptance and sexual liberation.

"'Rush' is the feeling of kissing a sweaty stranger on a dance-floor, a two-hour date that turned into a weekend, a crush, a winter, a summer," explained Sivan. "Party after party, after party after party. All of my experiences from a chapter where I feel confident, free and liberated," he added. "Independent, yet somehow the most connected to the music and community around me."
  • The title nods to "Rush," a brand of poppers widely embraced by gay men for their euphoric effects. The intoxicant helps them to relax during their sexual encounters.
  • Sivan wrote the song with Alex Chapman and Leland, and the track's producers Zhone, Novodor and Stylaz Fuego.

Mississippi-born songwriter Brett Leland McLaughlin is Sivan's go-to songwriting partner. Their other collaborations include "Youth," "My My My!" and "Dance To This."

Kaelyn Behr, also known by his stage name Styalz Fuego, is a songwriter and record producer based in the United States. He previously worked with Sivan on the Knocks remix for his collaboration with Charli XCX, "1999," and his single with Regard and Tate McRae, "You."
  • Directed by Gordon von Steiner, the queer-celebrating video was filmed in Berlin. Canadian/British filmmaker and photographer Gordon von Steiner has created editorial films for American Vogue, Vogue Italia, and W magazine. His commercial credits include Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dior, and Prada.
  • Troye Sivan released a "Rush" remix EP on August 18, 2023, featuring remixes from Big Freedia, Punctual, Tom Santa, and Leland.

Each of the four remixes has its own unique sound. Big Freedia's remix gives the song a bouncy and energetic feel, while Punctual's remix is stripped-down and atmospheric. Tom Santa's remix is an electronic take on the song, while Leland's remix is more pop-oriented.
  • Sivan dropped a further remix of "Rush" on August 31, 2023, with Hyunjin of K-pop group Stray Kids and English singer-songwriter PinkPantheress as guest stars.

The revamped version of "Rush" adds a new second verse from PinkPantheress. Hyunjin also lends his voice to the final pre-chorus, chorus, post-chorus, and outro.

The collab with Hyunjin follows Sivan's flirty TikTok videos featuring the K-pop idol after they met at a Versace show in May 2023.
  • This won Song of the Year at the 2023 ARIA Awards. Sivan also took home the prizes for Best Solo Artist, Best Produced Release and Best Engineered Release for the album Rush.
