I've always envisioned it as Nicola Tesla vs Thomas Edison, especially the "Death Professor" and "falsify your deeds" line, as it seems to be a reference to Edison routinely going from city to city electrocuting animals with AC current (invented(?) by N Tesla), and also Edison's tendency to patent the works of other inventors under his own name.
