Album: Stay Hungry (1984)

Songfacts®:

  • A track from Twisted Sister's breakthrough third album Stay Hungry, the title is an initialism for "Sick Mother F--ker."

By this time, the band had been around since 1973, and while most of their audience discovered the band through their MTV hits "We're Not Gonna Take It" and "I Wanna Rock," they had a loyal following from their years slogging it out in clubs. Introducing this song at concerts when Twisted Sister was at the peak of their powers, lead singer (and songwriter) Dee Snider said: "This is a song that will probably never make it to the radio, and it's a song that not everybody's going to like. It's a song for the real friends of Twisted Sister - the people who have been there through [1983 album] You Can't Stop Rock 'N' Roll, back through [1982 album] Under The Blade. This one is for you."
  • When Dee Snider testified at Senate hearings in 1985 about placing warning labels on albums with explicit lyrics, we were treated to this exchange with Tipper Gore, his PMRC nemesis. Snider had explained that he was a Christian and upheld those values.

Gore: "Mr. Snider, what is the name of your fan club?"

Snider: "The fan club is called the SMF Fans of Twisted Sister."

Gore: "And what does 'SMF' stand for when it is spelled out?"

Snider: "It stands for the Sick Mother F--king Fans of Twisted Sister."

Gore: "Is this also a Christian group?"

Snider: "I do not believe profanity has anything to do with Christianity."
