Songfacts®:

  • "Chanel" is an Afrobeat-pop track by Tyla based on the philosophical question: if love doesn't come with luxury, can we even call it love? The song is essentially "Water," but with a credit card.
  • Tyla told BBC Radio 1's Jack Saunders that the song is "for all the girlies that not only want to be put in Chanel but also want to be treated like luxury."

She insists the point isn't just literally getting designer handbags, but expressing worth, value, and boundaries. It's the 2025 pop equivalent of Aretha Franklin spelling out "R-E-S-P-E-C-T," only this time the respect comes quilted, double-C logo optional.
  • Ian Kirkpatrick (Sabrina Carpenter, Dua Lipa) and P2J (Stormzy, Jorja Smith) produced the song. They both contributed to its songwriting alongside Tyla, Douglas F and Bibi Bourelly (Rihanna's "Bitch Better Have My Money," Miley Cyrus' "Thousand Miles"). Douglas F also sings the hook, "Put her in Chanel."
  • "Chanel" was released as a standalone single on October 24, 2025. The track was originally intended for inclusion on Tyla's second extended play WWP but was ultimately released independently.
  • Tyla first previewed "Chanel" in Berlin during an exclusive fan listening event in July 2025. She performed it again at the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park on September 27, 2025.
  • The accompanying music video is a nostalgic homage to 1990s-2010s fashion, with Tyla wearing vintage Chanel clothing from that era. The video was styled by Ron Hartleben and pays tribute to supermodel Helena Christensen, with Tyla recreating one of Christensen's iconic looks by wearing the pink bustier that the model famously wore as a minidress. The visual also showcases the iconic Chanel "Hula Hoop" bag paired with gym shorts and a bustier top, combining luxury with casual sportswear.
  • No pop release in 2025 would be complete without at least one social-media skirmish, and "Chanel" obliged. Shortly after the song's release, rapper Yung Miami claimed Tyla had stolen it from her, alleging she had played the track for Tyla, who then copied it and released it first.
  • Founded in Paris in 1910 by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, the house is responsible for liberating women from corsets, and inventing the Little Black Dress, the tweed suit, and the Chanel No. 5 perfume introduced in 1921. Karl Lagerfeld ruled the label from 1983 until 2019, followed by Virginie Viard, and in that time Chanel expanded into haute couture, ready-to-wear, watches, jewelry, and countless pop lyrics. In fact, Chanel references are practically their own micro-genre: Frank Ocean has a "Chanel," Young Thug has a "Chanel," Becky G has a "Chanel," and artists from Nicki Minaj to 24kGoldn to Eladio Carrión have all done "Coco Chanel."
  • TikTok choreographer @kipittok created a "Chanel" dance challenge set to a snippet of the chorus in early October 2025. Her clip garnered hundreds of thousands of views, setting into motion a dance trend.
