Songfacts®:

  • This song finds Tyler, The Creator addressing a love interest who still has feelings for an ex-girlfriend.

My brother said I'm on the spectrum
Don't call me selfish, I hate sharin'
    This 60-40 isn't workin'
I want a hundred of your time, you're mine

Tyler desperately wants to convince the person not to leave him. He goes to extreme lengths - even threatening to kill both his lover and his lover's former girlfriend.
  • "New Magic Wand" begins with a spoken word contribution from the standup comedian Jerrod Carmichael. It is one of five Igor tracks Carmichael appears on.
  • Santigold contributes background vocals. The Brooklyn songstress previously linked up with Tyler, The Creator's for his 2018 Christmas track "Lights On." That song can be found on the Music Inspired by Illumination & Dr. Seuss' The Grinch EP.
  • "New Magic Wand" incorporates elements of "Vsichni Praznj," a 1981 track by the Czech experimental group Siluetes 61.
  • This contains Tyler's favorite moment on one of his songs. He explained in a tweet the moment occurs at 1:25 with the "speaker at its highest," adding it's "purely based on feeling."

Tyler went on to say: "Haven't been able to articulate why. I've also came to the conclusion this is my favorite song I've made. It's so, Tyler: everything I've attempted in one, executed perfectly."
  • A team of Tyler lookalikes came out of the audience and joined the original on stage when he performed this at the Grammys in 2020, where Igor won for Best Rap Album. At the end of the set, Tyler made a grand exit, fall backward off the set and disappearing.
