Songfacts®:

  • This self-produced kaleidoscopic love song is Tyler the Creator's personal story of fantasizing about a lover that only exists in his mind.

You live in my dream state
    Anytime I count sheep
That's the only time we make up
You exist behind my eyelids, my eyelids
    I don't wanna wake up

Tyler is totally wrapped up in his dream lover.
  • The song features vocals performed by Colombian singer-songwriter Kali Uchis, who also featured on two tracks from Tyler's Cherry Bomb album. Asked by Billboard how she first hooked up with Tyler, the songstress replied:

"He reached out to me on Twitter like, 'hey, when you come to California, hit me up.' When I went to California, I [did]. It started like, "oh yeah, get on this song. Do these little 'do do do do's.'" And then he started realizing, 'oh damn, you work really fast! Oh wow, you're writing all this stuff right now.' We just respect the s--t out of each other as artists, so that's why we work so well."
  • Tyler originally wrote the song for former One Direction member Zayn Malik. Writing on Twitter, the rapper explained that he decided to keep the track for himself after Malik twice skipped the studio sessions to record the song. Tyler added that he was glad that he ended up recording the track, saying that it "worked out actually."

Tyler previously collaborated with Malik when he remixed the ex 1D member's single "Pillowtalk" from his 2016 debut album.
  • Tyler shot a music video for the track directed by the artist under his alias Wolf Haley. At the start of the clip, A$AP Rocky talks on the phone while Tyler works on his aircraft carrier. Kali Uchis later appears on a rescue boat with her yellow raincoat-donned crew.
  • After TikTok users began lip-syncing or commenting on the overlapping "Okay, okay, okay" and "La la la" hooks in the song, it quickly became a trending hit, leading "See You Again" to enter the Hot 100 for the first time in April 2023. It also entered the charts in several other countries, including Canada and Australia.

Tyler and Kali Uchis gave the song a boost with a performance during weekend one of Coachella on April 16, 2023, with Tyler making a special appearance during Uchis' set.
